Summer Lift Maintenance

Summer maintenance has started on the lifts at Loon.  My name is Scot and I’m a lift mechanic at Loon.  I’ve been working here since 1993, as a liftie, a patroller and occasionally as a snow maker.  I’ll be contributing some  updates and photos from the perspective of a mechanic.  There will be lots of grease, belt dust, sun, rain and maybe even a bear.

Our first week after the skiers and riders left town, we started changing the bearing in the bull wheel at the bottom of The Gondola.  It’s one of the bigger jobs we’ll tackle this summer.  Getting five tons of steel unbolted and lowered to the ground takes a lot of careful work to do it safely.  It’ll take us more than a week to complete.
